Critical Commentary

This is the first in-depth review of India’s energy policies by IEA which examines the country’s achievements in developing its energy sector as well as the challenges it faces in ensuring a sustainable energy future. This report details an impressive track record of expanding access to electricity and clean cooking for Indians and the swift deploying of renewable energy technologies. The report narrates the story of India’s rise in global energy markets an cites it as inspiring example for the rest of the world. The  analysis covers the full breadth of the country’s energy sector and also presents recommendations for strengthening energy policies in various areas like, advancing energy market reforms, notably in power and gas markets; integrating higher shares of variable renewables; addressing air and water quality; and reducing vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.
