Critical Commentary

This chart reflects responses to Question #20A from the Winter 2020 survey, which asked, ”If yes to Q20, please describe the nature of the disruptions?” This was an open-ended question, and there were 31 responses. Responses to this question were thematically coded, with all responses fitting into one or more of the following themes:

  • Disruption due to service outage

  • Disruption due to broken or outdated appliance/system

  • Disruption due to nonpayment

  • Disruption due to weather

  • Slow internet

  • Other

The most common theme was “disruption due to service outage”, with 14 responses fitting into this category, followed by “disruption due to broken or outdated appliance/system”, with 10 responses fitting into this category. Nine responses fit into the “slow internet” category, four responses fit into the “disruption due to weather” category, and three responses fit into the “disruption due to nonpayment” category. Five responses were categorized as “other”, with responses discussing internet shortages due to wildlife interfering with internet cables, disruptions due to a home being old, and not having internet until the pandemic, as they received Comcast’s Internet Essentials Package. It’s important to note that some responses contained multiple themes.

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 83 people over a fourteen week period between December 2020 and March 2021. Visit the Winter 2020 Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 - Survey Results page to view more data from our survey. The project is approved by Drexel’s IRB.
