Critical Commentary
This chart reflects responses from Question #42 from the Winter 2020 survey, which asks respondents, “Has COVID-19 changed or added other weekly/monthly expenses?” This is an open ended question.
Eighty-two respondents answered this question.
Twenty-four (29.3%) respondents said that COVID-19 has not changed any other weekly or monthly expenses.
Nine respondents (11%) answered “everything.”
Forty-three (52.4%) mentioned increased grocery bills.
Five respondents (6.1%) reported an increased “entertainment bill” including new streaming services, games, and art supplies.
Another five respondents (6.1%) mentioned saving money on gasoline.
Six respondents (7.3%) mentioned increases in their medical bills.
Three respondents (3.7%) answered “yes, unspecified.”
Nine respondents (11%) mentioned having to buy personal protection equipment such as masks or disinfectants.
Four respondents (4.9%) reported saving money by not traveling.
Six respondents (7.3%) reiterated their utility bills had increased.
The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 83 people over a fourteen week period between December 2020 and March 2021.
