Critical Commentary

This chart reflects responses to Question #31a from the Winter 2020 survey, which asked respondents, “Of the following utilities, is the bill amount different from what you would typically expect during this time of year?” The options available were “gas”; “internet”; “electric”; “oil”; and “water.”

 

All eighty-three respondents answered this question. 

  • Thirty-four respondents (41%) had their water bill price increased. 

  • Forty-two (50.6%) respondents said their gas bill increased. 

  • Fifty-five respondents (66.3%) said their electric bill increased. 

  • Twenty-one respondents (25%) had their internet bill increased. 

  • One respondent (1.2%) had their oil bill increase.

 

  • One respondent (1.2%) said their oil bill decreased. 

  • Two respondents (2.4%) said their internet bill decreased. 

  • Two respondents (2.4%) had their gas bill decrease. 

  • Three respondents (3.6%) had their electricity bill decrease. 

 

  • Thirty-three respondents (39.8%) said their water bill stayed the same. 

  • Thirty-two respondents (38.6%) said their gas bill stayed the same. 

  • Twenty-five (30.1%) respondents said their electric bill stayed the same. 

  • Forty-seven respondents (56.6%) said their internet bill stayed the same. 

  • Four respondents (4.8%) said their oil bill stayed the same. 

 

  • Two respondents (2.4%) didn’t know about whether their gas bill had changed. -

  • Four respondents (4.8%) didn’t know about water. 

  • One respondent (1.2%) didn’t know about their internet bill.

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 83 people over a fourteen week period between December 2020 and March 2021.
