Critical Commentary

Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) announced a new grant program for households facing pandemic related financial hardships on January 12th 2021, with the program to start on January 19th, 2021. Eligible households can receive up to $300 on their natural gas bill. To apply, individuals call PGW to verbally confirm their eligibility, which is based on meeting any of the following circumstances:

• Households experiencing nancial hardship related to the pandemic. • Households in which a member is furloughed from their job or has lost work, even if there is another income-earning member in the household. • Households with a self-employed person and/or contract employee. • Households in which a household member is caring for someone with COVID-19. • Households with school-aged children impacted by stay-at-home orders.

This program is significant because no paperwork is required to apply for this program, and it was announced at the peak of the winter season in Philadelphia, where temperatures are below freezing, and as pandemic related financial hardships persist.
