The chart reflects responses to Question #26 from the Winter 2020 survey, which asked: “If you and members of your COVID-19 household are working/schooling remotely, what kind of technology is required for work and school?” The pre-structured options were “laptops, computers or tablets”; “computer accessories such as microphones, headsets, etc”; “a landline”; “cloud hosting”; “virtual meeting applications”; “internet”; “cloud hosting”; “an email address”; and “an unlimited data plan.”

Sixty-five respondents answered this question.

  • Sixty-two respondents (95.4%) reported that they needed computers, laptops, or tablets.

  • Thirty-two respondents (49.2%) reported that they required computer accessories such as microphones or headsets.

  • Fifty-five respondents (84.6%) reported that they needed an email address.

  • Five respondents (7.7%) reported that they needed a landline.

  • Eleven respondents (16.9%) reported that they required cloud hosting.

  • Sixty respondents (92%) mentioned requiring a virtual meeting application.

  • Sixty-four respondents (98.5%) responded that they required an internet connection.

  • Thirty-one respondents (47.7%) reported that they required unlimited data.

  • Six respondents (9.2%) answered “other” (half mentioned their cell phone and the other half mentioned electricity.)

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 83 people over a fourteen week period between December 2020 and March 2021. Visit the Winter 2020 Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 - Survey Results page to view more data from our survey. The project is approved by Drexel’s IRB.
