Critical Commentary

This chart reflects responses to Question #23 from the Spring 2020 and Winter 2020 surveys, which asked “Does anyone in your household use a medical device that is powered by electricity?” This was a check-all-that-apply question, and there were 164 cumulative responses. The options for this question were as follows:

  • Yes, the device is exclusively powered by being connected to an outlet

  • Yes, the device is able to run on its own for extended periods of time

  • Yes, but the device is not needed on a daily basis

  • No, no one in the house needs an electrically-powered device

The most common response was “No, no one in the house needs an electrically-powered device”, with 126 individuals selecting this option, followed by “Yes, the device is exclusively powered by being connected to an outlet” with 31 individuals selecting this option. Six individuals chose “Yes, the device is able to run on its own for extended periods of time” and three individuals chose “Yes, but the device is not needed on a daily basis”. One individual’s response was classified as “other”, as they have a massage chair in their home that they use to relax their muscles. It’s important to note that some individuals selected multiple options within the same response.

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey, which has been administered to 169 people over two time periods. The Spring 2020 survey was administered to 86 people between May and June, and the Winter 2020 survey was administered to 83 people between December 2020 and March 2021. Visit the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 - Spring + Winter 2020 Survey Results page to view more data from our survey. The project is approved by Drexel’s IRB.
