Critical Commentary

This question reflects responses to Question #31a from the Spring 2020 and Winter 2020 surveys, which asked “Of the following utilities, is the bill amount different from what you would typically expect during this time of year? For example, November 2019 versus November 2020. Please check what is applicable.” The utility bills available for respondents to report on were “gas”; “internet”; “electric”; “oil”; and “water.” Respondents could indicate their bill increased, decreased, stayed the same, or they did not know.

Seventy-six respondents reported their electric bill increased. Fifty-three respondents reported their gas bill increased. Forty-four respondents reported their water bill increased. Twenty-four respondents reported their internet bill increased. One respondent reported their oil bill increased.

Eight respondents reported their electric bill decreased. Five respondents reported their gas bill decreased. One respondent reported their water bill decreased. Three respondents reported their internet bill decreased. One respondent reported their oil bill decreased.

Fifty-eight respondents reported their electric bill stayed the same. Sixty-two respondents reported their gas bill has stayed the same. Sixty-one respondents reported their water bill stayed the same. One hundred respondents reported their internet bill stayed the same. Five respondents reported their oil bill stayed the same.

Twenty respondents did not know about their electric bill. Twenty-two respondents did not know about their gas bill. Twenty-nine respondents did not know about their water bill. Seventeen respondents did not know about their internet bill. Thirteen respondents did not know about their oil bill.

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey, which has been administered to 169 people over two time periods. The Spring 2020 survey was administered to 86 people between May and June, and the Winter 2020 survey was administered to 83 people between December 2020 and March 2021. Visit the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 - Spring + Winter 2020 Survey Results page to view more data from our survey. The project is approved by Drexel’s IRB.
