The chart reflects responses to Question #26 from the Spring 2020 and Winter 2020 surveys, which asked: “If you and members of your COVID-19 household are working/schooling remotely, what kind of technology is required for work and school?” The pre-structured options were “laptops, computers or tablets”; “computer accessories such as microphones, headsets, etc”; “a landline”; “cloud hosting”; “virtual meeting applications”; “internet” (broadband internet in spring version); “cloud hosting”; “an email address”; and “an unlimited data plan.”

158 respondents answered this question. 151 respondents (95.5%) reported that they required a computer, laptop, or tablet. Eighty-five respondents (53.8%) reported that they needed computer accessories. 119 (75.3%) reported that they needed an email address. Thirteen respondents (8.2%) required a landline. Thirty-one respondents (19.6%) reported that they needed cloud hosting. 136 (86.1%) reported that they needed an internet connection. Forty-six respondents (29.1%) reported that they needed unlimited data. Eighteen respondents (11.3%) answered N/A. Six respondents (3.8%) answered “other” (half mentioned a cell phone and the other half mentioned electricity). 120 respondents (75.9%) mentioned requiring a virtual meeting application

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey, which has been administered to 169 people over two time periods. The Spring 2020 survey was administered to 86 people between May and June, and the Winter 2020 survey was administered to 83 people between December 2020 and March 2021. Visit the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 - Spring + Winter 2020 Survey Results page to view more data from our survey. The project is approved by Drexel’s IRB
