Critical Commentary

This chart reflects responses to Question #2 from the Winter 2020 survey which asked: “When did COVID-19 begin to impact your housing, employment, and school conditions?” This was an open ended question. The categorized responses are as follows:

  • February 2020
  • March 2020
  • Wasn’t affected
  • Didn’t have significant impacts
  • Affected everything (work, school, housing, etc)
  • I became unemployed due to COVID-19
  • Was unemployed prior to COVID-19
  • COVID-19 has significantly impacted my financials
  • Moved to remote setting
  • On disability
  • Changed sanitation habits
  • Impacted my interactions with the health system
  • Saw living arrangements re-structured due to COVID-19
  • Care-taking responsibilities changed
  • Impacted my or my children’s schooling
  • Changed recreational habits
  • Covid impacted work, housing, or schooling later than March

A total of 81 respondents answered this question. The total number of responses categorized will add up to more than 81 because one answer could fit multiple categories.

  • 7 respondents noted impacts already in February, even though impacts were not specified;
  • 53 respondents noted they saw impacts in March;
  • 4 respondents noted they were not affected;
  • 2 respondents said they did not witness significant impacts;
  • 10 respondents noted everything was affected (including work, school, and housing);
  • 6 respondents noted they became unemployed due to COVID-19;
  • 2 respondents were unemployed prior to COVID-19;
  • 7 respondents noted their financials were significantly impacted, even whilst employed, because of COVID-19; 
  • 5 respondents noted their working conditions moved to a remote setting;
  • 2 respondents said they were on disability;
  • 3 respondents noted changes in their sanitation habits (mask wearing, clothes washing, etc.);
  • 4 respondents noted some impact in how or when they interacted with the health system (this includes doctors’ visits or even contracting COVID-19);
  • 5 respondents saw living arrangements restructured due to COVID-19; 
  • 2 respondents saw their care-taking responsibility changed;
  • 4 respondents said COVID-19 impacted either their or their children’s schooling;
  • 10 respondents noted a change in recreational habits;
  • 7 respondents noted COVID-19 impacts were felt more significantly at a later time than March.

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 83 people over a fourteen week period between December 2020 and March 2021.
