Critical Commentary

This chart reflects responses to Question #32 from the Spring 2021 survey which asks respondents “What would you do if you received a shut-off notice and did not have the money to prevent the shut-off?” Sixty-four respondents answered this question and responses were categorized as follows.

  • Eighteen respondents (28.1%) answered they would contact their utility company.

  • Three respondents (4.7%) answered they would try and get an extension.

  • Fifteen respondents (23.4%) answered they would try and arrange a payment plan.

  • Four respondents (6.3%) answered they would apply for LIHEAP/Crisis grants.

  • Eleven respondents (1.7%) answered they would borrow the money.

  • Ten respondents (15.6%) answered they would seek assistance from family.

  • Six respondents (9.4%) answered they would look for assistance programs.

    • 4 respondents mentioned LIHPEAP/Crisis

  • Ten respondents (15.6%) answered they would go to community agencies.

  • Two respondents (3.2%) answered they did not know.

  • Two respondents (3.2%) answered they seek help.

  • Three respondents (4.7%) answered they would go into their savings.

  • Three respondents (4.7%) answered they would contact a government agency.

  • One respondent (1.6%) would sell their possessions.

  • One respondent (1.6%) would get a second job. 

  • One respondent (1.6%) reported they would just pay it.

  • One respondent (1.6%) would let the shutoff occur.

  • Two respondents (3.2%) answered they would call a doctor.

  • One respondent (1.6%) would “find the money.” 

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 65 people over a fourteen week period between March 2021 and July 2021.
