Critical Commentary

This chart reflects responses to Question #26 in Spring 2020 and Winter 2021 and Question #23 from the Spring 2021 survey, which asked “If you and members of your COVID-19 household are working/schooling remotely, what kind of technology is required for work and school?”  answered this question. The available options were.

  • Computers, laptops, or tablets

  • Computer accessories such as microphones, headsets, etc.

  • Email

  • Landline

  • Cloud Hosting

  • Internet

  • Virtual Meeting Applications

  • Unlimited Data

  • Other

186 respondents answered this question.

  • 181 respondents (97.3%) said they needed computers, laptops, or tablets.

  • 150 respondents (80.7%) said they needed an email address.

  • 178 respondents (95.7%) said they needed the internet.

  • 160 respondents (86%) said they needed virtual meeting applications. 

  • Fifteen respondents (8.1%) needed a landline phone.

  • 108 respondents (58.1%) reported that they needed computer accessories such as headsets, webcams, or microphones.

  • Forty respondents (21.5%) needed cloud hosting.

  • Sixty respondents (32.3%) needed unlimited data.

  • Fifteen respondents (8.1%) answered other.

    • Tenrespondents mentioned a cell phone.

    • Five respondents mentioned electricity.

    • One respondent mentioned light.

    • One respondent mentioned a radio.

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey, which has been administered to 234 people over two time periods. The Spring 2020 survey was administered to 86 people between May and June, and the Winter 2020 survey was administered to 83 people between December 2020 and March 2021 The Spring 2021 survey was administered to 65 people between March 2021 and June 2021.
