Critical Commentary
This chart reflects responses to Question #2 from both the Spring 2020 and Winter 2020 surveys, which asked: “When did COVID-19 begin to impact your housing, employment, and school conditions?” On the Spring 2020 the structured answers were:

The above categorizations were used to categorize the answers on the Winter 2020, which was left open-ended.
A total of 167 respondents answered this question. The following was collected:
12 respondents noted impacts already in February, whether these were school, work, or housing-related
134 respondents noted being impacted in March (whether this be school, work, or housing)
37 respondents noted they were not affected
6 respondents said they did not witness significant impacts
19 respondents noted everything was affected (including work, school, and housing)
8 respondents noted they became unemployed due to COVID-19
11 respondents were unemployed prior to COVID-19
7 respondents noted their financials were significantly impacted, even whilst employed, because of COVID-19
5 respondents noted their working conditions moved to a remote setting
2 respondents said they were on disability
3 respondents noted changes in their sanitation habits (mask wearing, clothes washing, etc.)
4 respondents noted some impact in how or when they interacted with the health system (this includes doctors’ visits or even contracting COVID-19)
37 respondents saw living arrangements restructured due to COVID-19
2 respondents saw their care-taking responsibility changed
4 respondents said COVID-19 impacted either their or their children’s schooling
10 respondents noted a change in recreational habits
7 respondents noted COVID-19 impacts were felt more significantly at a later time than March
33 respondents noted their housing was not impacted
14 noted neither their work nor their employment conditions had been impacted by COVID-19
20 respondents noted they were not students
15 respondents noted they do not live with students or children who attend school
The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey, which has been administered to 169 people over two time periods. The Spring 2020 survey was administered to 86 people between May and June, and the Winter 2020 survey was administered to 83 people between December 2020 and March 2021.
