This chart reflects results from Question 25B on the Spring 2020 survey, which asks “What do you think makes your home energy inefficient?” This was a check-all-that-apply question, and there were 79 responses. The options for this question were “I don’t use energy saving light bulbs”, “My home does not use any renewable energy sources”, “My home is not well insulated”, “I don’t practice conservation”, “My windows are drafty”, “I have older-model appliances”, “My electrical wiring has not been updated”, “My stove emits gas when I use it”, “My behaviors make my home energy inefficient”, “I don’t know”, and other”. The most common option selected was “My home does not use any renewable energy sources” with 32 individuals selecting this, followed by “My windows are drafty” with 22 individuals selecting this. Twelve individuals selected “My behaviors make my home energy inefficient”, 15 individuals chose “My home is not well insulated”, 16 individuals chose “I have older-model appliances”, and 10 individuals chose “I don’t use energy saving light bulbs”. Eleven individuals also chose “My stove emits gas when I use it”, 7 individuals chose “My electrical wiring has not been updated”, and six individuals chose “I don’t practice conservation”. Ten individuals selected “I don’t know”, and 11 individuals chose “other”. Individuals that chose “other” gave varying examples of how else their home is energy inefficient, such as having an air conditioning unit, living in an old house, and living in a house with segmented building construction. It’s important to note that some individuals selected multiple options within the same response.

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 86 people over a six week period in May-June 2020.
