As the demand for electricity is increasing day by day and the available resources are not comparable with the consumer needs, the Government of India has initiated a subsidy scheme called the "Pradhan Mantri Solar Panel Yojna." This news article by the Economic Times is an interesting read that explains the need to install solar panels, the hesitation by the people to install the same due to the unattractive inital installation prices, and the benefits and incentives that the citizens can receieve if they install these panels.
However with the aid of the government, these days, the installation of these panels have become popular in the urban areas where maximum people are trying to cut down their heavy electricty bills by switching to solar energy. This scheme is limited to some states, however after seeing the attention that it has captured from the population, they plan to make it accessible to all the states within the country. This rooftop system has a lot of benefits specially for the commercial organizations since they can exploit maximum generation from the peak sunshine days and it is also much cheaper than the grid power or the electric generator.
For the general public, there are an array of benefits laid out by the government for those who are willing to install these panels on their rooftops such as providing approved housing/home loans from nationalized banks within the country. These are attractive incentives for both urban as well as rural population all for the price of installing solar panels, of which the government covers 30% if not more of the installation costs. Another incentive that the government offers is the ability of the consumers to earn money by selling the excess generation of the power units within the regulated tariffs set by the government. This can be a great source of income for the population and at the same time, a helping hand to curb the energy vulnerabilty crisis in a developing country like India.
This article also lays out the application process for this scheme.
