The chart here reflects answers collected from Question #15b of the Spring2020 and Winter 2020 surveys, which asked: “If no to Q15, what might you do if you did lose heat?” The structured responses for this question follow: 

  • Call my landlord.

  • Call an HVAC company.

  • Call my utility company.

  • See if I could figure it out myself

  • Ask someone I know who works with heaters to fix it.

  • I don’t know.

  • Other

From the 92 responses collected for this question, the following was drawn: 

  • 18 respondents would call their landlord

    • 1 would also call their utility company

  • 13 respondents would call an HVAC company

    • 1 respondent would also call their utility

    • 1 other respondent would go somewhere with heat

  • 17 respondents would use space heaters

  • 12 respondents would call their utility company

    • 1 would use space heaters in the meantime

    • 1 other respondent would see if anybody else’s heat was out

  • 9 respondents would wear layers

  • 8 respondents said they didn’t know

  • 7 ask someone they know who works with heaters to fix it

    • 1 would also try to figure it out themselves

  • 4 respondents would see if they could figure it out themselves

  • 4 respondents would go to parents, friends, or relatives’ home

  • 2 respondents said they would use mixed methods to heat their homes and themselves

  • 1 respondents would use a fireplace

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey, which has been administered to 169 people over two time periods. The Spring 2020 survey was administered to 86 people between May and June, and the Winter 2020 survey was administered to 83 people between December 2020 and March 2021.
