Critical Commentary
This chart shows results from Question #21 from the Spring 2020 and Winter 2020 surveys, which asked “Have you experienced energy service disruptions with any of the following since COVID-19 began?” This was a check-all-that-apply question, and the pre-structured options for the Spring 2020 survey were as follows:
electricity was down
heater broke
ran out of oil
slow internet
air conditioning not working
gas suspended
water not available
No
n/a
The pre-structured options for the Winter 2020 survey were as follows:
Electricity
Heat
Oil
Internet
Air conditioning
Gas
Water
No
Other
There were 163 cumulative responses to this question, and the most common option selected was “no”, with 88 individuals selecting this, followed by “slow internet/internet”, with 54 individuals selecting this. Twenty-six individuals selected “electricity was down/electricity”, 11 individuals selected “heater broke/heat”, seven individuals selected “air conditioning not working/air conditioning”, and six individuals selected “water not available/water”. Zero individuals selected “ran out of oil/oil”, zero individuals selected “gas suspended/gas”, zero individuals selected “n/a”, and zero individuals selected “other”. It’s important to note that many individuals selected multiple options.
The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey, which has been administered to 169 people over two time periods. The Spring 2020 survey was administered to 86 people between May and June, and the Winter 2020 survey was administered to 83 people between December 2020 and March 2021. Visit the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 - Spring + Winter 2020 Survey Results page to view more data from our survey. The project is approved by Drexel’s IRB.
