This paper by Owusu-Adjapong (2018) highlights the incidence of regular power outages in Ghana, and the impact of relying heavily on the Akosombo Dam, the largest generator of Ghana’s hydropower. Despite the fact that installed generation capacity has increased (almost doubled) over the course of 2006-2016, the problem of frequent power outages still surges on. The inability of these installed generation facilities to function was attributed to fuel supply challenges. Recommendations made to remedy the situation include proper research and deployment of more advanced and efficient technology as well as investing in renewable energy sources.
The issue of power crisis in Ghana is an assemblage of varied elements that need to explored extensively to ascertain the policies and interventions that should be developed to mitigate it.
