If yes to Q21, please describe the nature of the disruptions? (Q21A, Cumulative)

This chart reflects responses to Question #21A from the Winter 2020 survey, which asked, ”If yes to Q21, please describe the nature of the disruptions?” This question was only asked in the winter survey, and not in the spring survey. This was an open-ended question, and there were 37 responses. Responses to this question were thematically coded, with all responses fitting into one or more of the following themes:

• Disruption due to service outage

• Disruption due to broken or outdated appliance/system

• Disruption due to nonpayment

• Disruption due to weather

• Slow internet

• Other

The most common theme was “disruption due to service outage”, with 15 responses fitting into that category, followed by “disruption due to broken or outdated appliance/system”, with 9 responses fitting into that category, and “slow internet”, with 9 responses fitting into that category. Three responses were categorized as “disruption due to weather”, and two responses were categorized as “disruption due to nonpayment”. Six responses were categorized as “other”, with responses discussing disruptions due to neglected maintenance of one’s heater, spotty electricity, and disruption due to switching internet service providers. It’s important to note that some responses contained multiple themes. 

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey, which has been administered to 169 people over two time periods. The Spring 2020 survey was administered to 86 people between May and June, and the Winter 2020 survey was administered to 83 people between December 2020 and March 2021.
