Critical Commentary
The chart represents the results of Question #15a from the Spring 2020 survey, which asks: “*If yes to Q15* What did you do when you lost heat?” This question aims to understand how respondents reacted when they were faced with disruptions to their heating systems. For the purposes of categorization, the following categories were drawn from the responses collected:
Nothing/Wait it out
Called someone for help
Put on extra layers
Use alternative heating source
Slept through it
Left the home
A total of 29 respondents answered this question. Numbers may add up to more than 30 due to the fact respondents’ answers may have simultaneously reflected more than one category. The responses collected were categorized as follows:
2 respondents did nothing to address the issue or simply waited for the heat to be restored;
14 respondents called someone (landlord, utility company, contractor) to fix the issue;
9 respondents used extra layers (clothing, covers, etc.) to stay warm;
6 respondents used alternative heating sources (fireplace or space heaters) to stay warm;
1 respondent slept through the issue (i.e. being without heat);
2 respondents left their home for the time being.
The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 86 people over a six week period in May-June 2020.
