Critical Commentary

This chart reflects survey results from Question 21 of the Spring 2020 survey, which asks “Have you experienced any of the following energy service disruptions since COVID-19 began?” This was a check-all-that-apply question, and the options were as follows:

  • electricity was down

  • heater broke

  • ran out of oil

  • slow internet

  • air conditioning not working

  • gas suspended

  • water not available

  • No

  •  n/a

There were 81 responses to this question, and the most common response was “no”, with 44 individuals reporting that they had not experienced any of the listed energy service disruptions since COVID-19 began. The second most common response was “slow internet”, with 30 individuals having experienced this, followed by “electricity was down”, with 9 individuals having experienced this. Three individuals experienced water not being available, 2 individuals had heaters that broke, and 2 individuals had air conditioning that was not working. Zero individuals reported their gas being suspended, and zero individuals ran out of oil. Occasional power surge had 1 respondent.

The data was produced by the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 Survey - Overview, which was administered to 86 people over a six week period in May-June 2020. Visit the Shifting Energy Demands in COVID-19 - Survey Results page to view more data from our survey. The project is approved by Drexel’s IRB.
